Blog (0) Madelaine Crabtree

I am taking this class for several reasons. Firstly, I need to take three religion courses in order to graduate. I wasn't originally planning to take this course this semester, but then a friend of mine told me how much he enjoyed the class and I was intrigued. Before speaking with him I was not even aware that this course existed, but after he told me how informative and interesting it was, I decided to look into the possibility of enrolling myself.
I will be completely honest: I am not religious in the slightest and I did very poorly in Sunday School as a child. My mother forced me to go to Sunday School every week after church and I fought her tirelessly until she let me quit. For a long time I felt as if I did not need to know about the Bible and its teachings because I was not a Christian. I was, however, very wrong: the Bible is immensely relevant in our society today. I have a strong desire to know the content of the Bible not only in order to understand the many references made to it by my friends, teachers, and pop-culture, but also so that I can properly argue the meaning of its contents with those that I believe are misinterpreting the Bible altogether. For example, I am fairly certain that Jesus did not condem homosexuals in his teachings, but I do not have enough knowledge of the Bible to back up my argument. I think it is a shame that the Bible is being so blatantly misinterpreted and used to justify inequality, and I would like to help spread truth and awareness even if I am not religious myself.
