I chose to take this class to fulfill my religious studies elective, but it was not difficult for me to decide to take this class over other offerings because I am interested in learning more about the New Testament. I was raised in a Baptist home and attended Sunday School for years. As a result, I feel that I have a reasonable knowledge of the New Testament, but I know that this course will help me to learn more about what the text is actually saying rather than the more "sugar coated" version I have experience with.

Also, I feel that approaching the New Testament critically will help me to be able to engage in more meaningful discussions as to the biblical positions various issues in modern culture. It seems that the text is often taken out of context and otherwise misused in order to support any number of opinions on certain topics, and I think that it would be helpful to have a deeper understanding of the actual meaning in order to refute these claims.

In 2 Peter, the text says "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge." I think that this shows that it is important that people who are interested in a relationship with God should not simply rely on faith, but should strive to gain knowledge about the subject as well. I believe that this class will help me to gain more objective knowledge about the New Testament.

2 Peter 1:5. The Holy Bible (NIV).
